The Journey: Your rainbow arc

What's your A to B?

Who are they before? and who do they become?
What is the journey you are taking your students on?

The above graphic is my "rainbow arc" for the E-course bootcamp course.

For some of you, this will be more concrete + doing oriented. (ie. How to use the manual settings on their DSLR) For others, it will be more being oriented. (ie. For my Cultivating Courage course I took my students from feeling stuck/afraid/lacking confidence to feeling more brave/confident/powerful)

But even if you are teaching them a skill (like how you use the manual settings on their DSLR) how do you want them to feel? This is important to note as well. Capable? confident? Do you want them to fall in love with photography?

Be listening for your stealth mission.

I had a stealth mission when I launched my Superhero Photo course. I knew that most of the students were coming to learn more about their camera. They wanted to know about lighting and composition. They wanted to understand aperture and ISO. They wanted to become better photographers of course!

I was happy to oblige and included lots of lessons like this, but you want to know the truth? My real passion was something entirely different. In my heart of hearts, I wanted to teach them how to see their world differently. I wanted to introduce them to a creative practice that would have them see more beauty, experience more gratitude and feel more alive. For me, taking better photos was just the icing on the cake. The real joy for me was giving them new eyes.

Make your own simple graphic. Your rainbow arc!

  • What is the journey you are inviting your participants on?
  • What's your A to B?
  • How do you want them to feel?
  • Do you have a stealth mission?

Your course will be in service to these intentions.

Draw this out on a piece of paper.

You can photograph it with your phone, email it to yourself + upload it right here into the classroom. Quick + dirty is perfect.
